Pakistan Railways Introduces Safety and Inclusion Reforms

New measures to support women and differently-abled passengers

Pakistan Railways has announced a set of reforms to improve travel facilities and ensure safer, more inclusive journeys for its passengers, with a strong focus on women and persons with disabilities. The initiatives were approved during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi.

Among the key reforms are gender-sensitive protocols designed to create a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment for women traveling by train. To reinforce this, awareness posters will soon be displayed at stations and inside trains, supported by regular announcements and awareness messages. Additionally, railway staff will undergo specialized gender-sensitization training to handle situations more effectively and respectfully.

In parallel, the reforms also include new facilities for differently-abled passengers. All refurbished trains will feature dedicated seating for persons with special needs. At major stations, wheelchairs will be made available to assist passengers requiring mobility support, ensuring a smoother and more dignified travel experience.

Minister Hanif Abbasi emphasized that these changes reflect Pakistan Railways’ commitment to modernization and inclusivity. He stated that by addressing the safety and accessibility concerns of women and differently-abled passengers, the department is working toward a passenger-friendly system that meets the needs of all travelers.

The reforms are expected to be rolled out in phases, starting with major urban stations before expanding to the wider railway network. The gender-sensitive measures, combined with accessibility upgrades, mark a significant step in building a more inclusive public transport system in Pakistan.
