Urban Flooding Ravages Cities in Pakistan: Key Reasons and Measures

In recent weeks, Pakistan has been grappling with a severe issue that has plagued its cities: urban flooding. The heavy monsoon rains coupled with inadequate infrastructure and poor drainage systems have led to catastrophic consequences, affecting the lives and properties of millions of people across the country.

In the early hours of Wednesday, Lahore received heavy rain and gusty winds provided relief from the intense heat and humidity, bringing down the temperature significantly.

The downpour brought respite for the heat-stricken residents of the provincial capital, breaking the spell of scorching weather that had persisted for days. However, the heavy rainfall resulted in the flooding of roads and streets in Lahore, posing significant difficulties for commuters and motorists trying to go about their daily activities.

Moreover, the downpour caused widespread power outages in various parts of the city as over 200 feeders of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) tripped, plunging several areas into darkness.

In addition to Lahore, other cities in Punjab, such as Gujranwala, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Jhelum, Phalia, Sharaqpur, Nankana, and Sheikhupura, also experienced heavy rains. The continuous downpour led to the flooding of low-lying areas, resulting in disruptions to traffic flow.

Official rainfall data for Lahore indicates that the highest precipitation was recorded at the Nishter Town Director Office with 118mm, followed by Jail Road with 56.5mm, Airport with 52mm, head office of WASA, Gulberg with 63mm, Gulshan-e-Ravi with 79mm, Iqbal Town with 69mm, Tajpura with 79mm, Johar Town with 82mm, Mughalpura with 88mm, Chowk Nakhuda with 54mm, Samanabad with 54mm, and Upper Mall with 88mm.

This data was collected between 03:55 am and 06:25 am on Thursday, with rain persisting in several areas of Lahore.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), more rain accompanied by wind and thundershowers is expected in Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, upper and central Punjab, and Northeast Balochistan.

Over the next 24 hours, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in upper Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding to the precipitation levels in these regions.

The issue is not only to Karachi, now Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar have been particularly hard-hit, with overflowing water inundating residential areas, disrupting transportation networks, and causing significant damage to public and private infrastructure. The situation has brought to light the urgent need for improved urban planning, resilient infrastructure, and efficient disaster management systems.

In Karachi, the country’s largest city, scenes of chaos and devastation have unfolded. Streets have turned into virtual rivers, submerging homes, shops, and vehicles.
