International Women’s Day 2025: Rights, Equality & Empowerment for ALL Women and Girls
Marking 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, this year’s theme calls for action on gender equality, empowerment, and inclusive opportunities.

On March 8, 2025, the world will celebrate International Women’s Day under the theme, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” This year marks a crucial moment for gender equality as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark blueprint for women’s rights globally.
Adopted in 1995 by 189 governments, the Beijing Declaration set a framework for critical issues such as education, health, political participation, economic empowerment, and the elimination of violence against women. Despite progress, growing challenges—including armed conflicts, climate crises, and shrinking civic spaces—threaten these advancements. With just five years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), urgent action is needed.
This year’s campaign focuses on three key areas:
- Advancing Women’s Rights – Fighting against discrimination, violence, and inequality to ensure the full protection of women and girls.
- Promoting Gender Equality – Addressing systemic barriers, challenging patriarchy, and elevating marginalized voices.
- Fostering Empowerment – Expanding access to education, employment, leadership, and decision-making opportunities, especially for young women.
Over the past three decades, the Beijing Declaration has led to historic progress:
- Legal Protections – From only 12 countries with domestic violence laws in 1995 to 1,583 legislative measures today.
- Access to Services – Expanded shelters, legal aid, and healthcare for survivors of gender-based violence.
- Youth Leadership – A new generation of feminists driving change through digital activism.
- Social Change – Challenging harmful norms and advancing gender-equal policies.
- Women in Peacebuilding – 112 countries now have National Action Plans on Women, Peace, and Security, up from 19 in 2010.
Despite these achievements, women’s rights face new threats. Now is the time to act. Governments, businesses, media, and communities must push for policies and investments that promote gender equality.
