Sindh Launches Pink Scooties Project to Empower Women with Free Electric Scooters
Free electric scooters to boost safe, affordable, and eco-friendly mobility for women across Sindh.

The Sindh government is preparing to roll out a transformative mobility initiative this week with the distribution of free pink electric scooters to women and female students across the province. The program, known as the Pink Scooties Project, is aimed at providing women with safer, faster, and more affordable commuting options while promoting independence and sustainability. Sindh Minister of Transport, Sharjeel Memon, announced the project during a high-level meeting with senior officials from the Transport Department and the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), calling it a milestone in women’s empowerment and mobility.
Memon explained that the initiative is designed to reduce commuting costs, save time, and ensure women have access to dignified travel. He further stressed that a transparent and merit-based process has been put in place to ensure that beneficiaries come from diverse backgrounds and that maximum participation is guaranteed. Applicants must be permanent residents of Sindh, either students or working women, holding a valid motorcycle or car driver’s licence. Selected beneficiaries will be required to pledge not to sell or sublet the scooter for at least seven years, ensuring that the vehicles remain in the hands of those who truly need them.
To guarantee fairness, the selection process will be carried out through a balloting system conducted in the presence of print and electronic media, overseen by a committee comprising officials from Transport, Excise, and Finance departments. Successful applicants will also be required to clear a road safety skill test before being handed over the scooters, ensuring that recipients are equipped to drive responsibly.
The Pink Scooties Project is more than just the distribution of vehicles; it comes with a comprehensive support package. This includes scooter registration and insurance, provision of helmets for road safety, and access to basic riding and safety training. In addition, beneficiaries will have access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure already being developed across Sindh, making the initiative practical and sustainable.
The Sindh government has framed the project as a long-term investment in gender equality and sustainable development. By enabling women to travel independently and securely, the program seeks to improve access to education and employment, reduce reliance on public transport, and foster an eco-friendly transport culture. Beyond mobility, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to women’s economic empowerment, breaking down barriers that have long restricted female participation in public and professional life.
Applications for the scooters are being accepted online through the official SMTA website, allowing women from both urban and rural areas to apply with ease. The government has emphasised that the process is simple, transparent, and accessible to all eligible women, ensuring inclusivity in its reach.
The launch of the Pink Scooties Project positions Sindh as a pioneer in gender-focused transport reform within Pakistan. By providing not only vehicles but also the ecosystem required to support safe and sustainable usage, the initiative addresses multiple challenges at once: mobility, safety, affordability, and empowerment. For many women, the arrival of their pink scooter will represent more than just a ride — it will be a symbol of dignity, independence, and opportunity.
