Researchers Recommend Universal RSV Vaccination for Pregnant Women and Infants
A University of Florida-led study urges widespread RSV immunization to protect newborns and reduce hospitalizations.

A new study led by a University of Florida Health scientist calls for the universal vaccination of pregnant women and infants against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), following extensive research into the virus’s severe effects on children. The findings, published in The Lancet Regional Health Americas on October 6, highlight the urgent need for preventive measures to combat one of the most common causes of lung infections and pneumonia in infants.
The research was led by Dr. Nirma Khatri Vadlamudi, Ph.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor of pharmaceutical outcomes and policy at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. Working with a team of Canada-based researchers, Dr. Vadlamudi evaluated the long-term burden of RSV-related hospitalizations among children and the potential global impact of vaccination. The study reinforces the importance of protecting vulnerable populations—especially infants in their first year of life—through proactive immunization strategies.
RSV is a leading cause of respiratory illness in young children worldwide, often resulting in serious health complications and hospital visits. According to Dr. Vadlamudi, though her study focused on Canadian children, the results are equally relevant to the United States and other regions. She referenced a 2023 Lancet study that revealed nearly 89% of 2,000 infants in the U.S. contracted RSV during their first year of life, leading to medical consultations or hospitalizations.
The study’s findings emphasize the significant toll RSV takes on pediatric health systems each year, particularly during seasonal outbreaks. In severe cases, RSV infection can cause wheezing, persistent coughing, and breathing difficulties—symptoms that may develop into pneumonia or bronchiolitis in infants. These respiratory complications are a major reason for pediatric hospital admissions during winter months.
Dr. Vadlamudi and her team recommend universal immunization programs for both pregnant women and infants as the most effective approach to lowering RSV-related hospitalizations and preventing severe illness. Immunizing pregnant women helps transfer protective antibodies to the fetus, ensuring that newborns have early immunity during the most vulnerable months of life. Combined with infant vaccination, this dual protection strategy could significantly reduce infection rates and lessen the strain on healthcare systems.
The study also highlights that, despite the global prevalence of RSV, vaccination coverage remains low, mainly due to limited public awareness and the recent availability of vaccines. The researchers stress the need for international collaboration and public health initiatives to ensure equitable access to RSV immunizations across both developed and developing nations.
As RSV continues to pose a major threat to children worldwide, the call for universal vaccination represents a crucial step toward preventing serious respiratory diseases in early childhood.
