Omega Fatty Acids Linked to Lower Alzheimer’s Risk in Women
New study suggests sex-specific differences in brain lipid biology could explain higher Alzheimer’s rates in women

New research has revealed that omega fatty acids may play a protective role against Alzheimer’s disease in women, offering a possible explanation for why women are disproportionately affected by the condition.
Scientists from King’s College London and Queen Mary University of London analysed blood samples from 841 participants, including people with Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment, and healthy individuals. Using advanced mass spectrometry, they examined more than 700 different lipids—fat molecules essential for brain health—and found striking sex-specific differences.
The study showed that women with Alzheimer’s had significantly lower levels of unsaturated fats, particularly those containing omega fatty acids, compared to healthy women. By contrast, no major differences in lipid composition were observed in men with Alzheimer’s versus healthy men. This suggests that lipid biology plays a different role in disease progression depending on sex.
Dr. Cristina Legido-Quigley, senior author of the study, highlighted the importance of these findings, noting that Alzheimer’s lipid biology appears to be different in women, opening new avenues for research and treatment. She suggested that women may benefit from ensuring adequate intake of omega fatty acids through diet or supplements, though she cautioned that clinical trials are needed to confirm whether increasing omega levels can alter the course of the disease.
Researchers also observed a rise in saturated, so-called “unhealthy” fats in women with Alzheimer’s, further reinforcing the idea that changes in lipid balance may contribute to disease risk. According to first author Dr. Asger Wretlind, this is the first large-scale study to show such sex-based differences in lipid composition, raising questions about how early in life these changes begin to occur in women.
The findings are particularly important given that two in three people living with dementia in the UK are women. While factors such as longer lifespans, hormonal changes, and social influences are thought to contribute, this research points to a biological explanation rooted in lipid metabolism.
Dr. Julia Dudley, Head of Research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, welcomed the study, noting that while it highlights key differences in how the disease develops in women, more work is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms. She emphasized the importance of further research across diverse populations to determine whether diet and lifestyle interventions could reduce risk.
The study, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, underscores the need to consider sex-specific biology in both Alzheimer’s research and treatment strategies. By tailoring prevention and care approaches to women, scientists believe progress toward more effective interventions—and ultimately a cure—could be accelerated.
