Emirati Women Redefining Fitness and Empowerment
From mountains to velodromes, Emirati women are breaking barriers, embracing sports, and inspiring communities across the UAE.

Across the UAE, a new generation of women is reshaping what it means to be active, confident, and empowered. From climbing mountains to sprinting in cycling velodromes, mastering parkour, or winning Paralympic medals, they are proving that fitness has no boundaries – cultural, social, or physical.
These trailblazers are part of a growing movement that views sports not just as competition, but as self-expression, wellbeing, and empowerment. The Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC), coinciding with the UAE’s “Year of the Community,” amplifies their voices, showing that the pursuit of physical activity can unite and inspire. Their achievements echo the vision of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who said, “Nothing makes me happier than to see women assume their rightful role in society and fulfil their potential.”
Nayla Al Baloushi became the first Emirati woman to summit Mount Everest in May 2022, redefining possibility for women in the region. Her climb was not just a personal triumph, but a beacon for others like Fatima Sajwani, who scaled Africa’s Margherita Peak and Mont Blanc, and Danah Al Ali, a pioneer mountaineer with peaks ranging from Kilimanjaro to Elbrus. Their journeys embody the essence of the DFC: determination, courage, and the pursuit of growth through physical challenge.
In urban landscapes, Amal Murad has carved her own path as the UAE’s first female parkour coach. Parkour, described as “the art of movement,” strengthens the body, coordination, and confidence by turning everyday spaces into opportunities for exploration. Her advice to young women is simple yet powerful: pursue activities for personal growth, not to prove a point, and approach obstacles with patience and understanding. Her philosophy mirrors DFC’s core message – movement in any form is transformative.
On the cycling tracks, Safiya Al Sayegh is breaking barriers as the first Emirati woman to qualify for a Summer Olympics cycling event, earning her place at Paris 2024. Her dedication reflects the growing support and infrastructure for women athletes across the UAE, strengthened by DFC events like Dubai Ride, Dubai Run, Dubai Stand Up Paddle, and Dubai Yoga.
Paralympic athlete Sara Al Senaani, the UAE’s first female Summer Paralympic medallist, continues to inspire as a Woman of Determination. Her bronze in the F33 shot-put at Rio 2016 is a testament to resilience, showing that inclusivity and empowerment in sports are possible for all. Her story reinforces DFC’s mission: every individual, regardless of ability, should experience the joy and strength that physical activity brings.
The common thread across these stories is community. Whether scaling mountains, leaping through urban spaces, cycling across Dubai, or standing on Paralympic podiums, Emirati women are discovering that the true power of sport lies in shared experiences and mutual support.
As Dubai positions itself as a global hub for wellness and active living, initiatives like the Dubai Fitness Challenge ensure Emirati women remain at the forefront of this inspiring journey. From Everest to Al Qudra’s cycling tracks, they are not just participants—they are pioneers, role models, and community builders, transforming fitness into empowerment and inspiring the next generation of women to dream bigger and reach higher.
