UN Women Opens Bonn Global Office to Boost Equality

New hub launched alongside New York and Nairobi to strengthen global action for women’s rights and gender equality

UN Women has officially inaugurated its new Bonn Global Office, marking a powerful expansion of its global footprint at a time when progress on women’s rights and gender equality is facing mounting challenges. Standing alongside the organization’s global offices in New York and Nairobi, the Bonn office will play a central role in driving UN Women’s worldwide mandate, strengthening coordination across regions, and supporting faster, more effective delivery for women and girls everywhere.

UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous highlighted the significance of this milestone, noting that the three global locations bring the organization closer to the communities it serves. She praised Germany for its long-standing leadership on gender equality and reaffirmed UN Women’s commitment to work from Bonn to unlock opportunities that advance sustainable development, peace, and security.

The launch comes at a pivotal moment as UN Women prepares to implement its Strategic Plan 2026–2029. The Bonn Global Office is designed to bring together key pillars of the organization—strategic partnerships, communications, sustainable financing, management, administration, and organizational strategy—under one roof. This structure strengthens innovation, collaboration, and operational excellence, allowing UN Women to respond more swiftly to evolving global needs.

A major feature of the new office is its role as the headquarters of the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, the UN’s only system-wide, General Assembly-mandated fund dedicated to ending all forms of violence against women and girls. This reinforces Bonn’s position as a global centre for sustainability, human rights, development cooperation, and multilateral action.

Located within the UN Bonn Campus, home to more than 25 UN entities, the new office places UN Women within a thriving ecosystem focused on climate action, environmental protection, sustainable development, and human rights. This close integration ensures that gender equality remains central to the UN’s work across these crucial areas.

Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Reem Alabali Radovan, welcomed the expansion, noting that promoting equality and gender justice is vital for global stability, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. She emphasised that Germany’s partnership with UN Women demonstrates the power of collective effort in addressing global challenges, especially at a time when multilateral cooperation is more important than ever.

Bonn’s Mayor Guido Déus expressed pride in the city’s growing role as an international UN hub, saying the new office contributes to Bonn’s identity as a centre for sustainability and global cooperation. He noted that UN Women’s staff will benefit from strong professional networks, excellent working conditions, and a high quality of life in the city.

With the establishment of the Bonn and Nairobi Global Offices, UN Women is building a modern, agile operational model tailored to today’s urgent gender equality challenges. This decentralized approach strengthens collaboration with governments, civil society, and global partners, ensuring more effective support for women and girls worldwide.

UN Women continues its mission to advance the rights and empowerment of all women and girls by transforming institutions, reshaping social norms, and improving services. Backed by strong support from partners such as Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the organization is positioned to accelerate progress at a time when global gender equality remains both essential and deeply at risk.
