Morocco Ranks 32nd in African Women’s Inclusion Index 2025, Faces Challenges in Economic Equality

Despite progress in leadership representation, Morocco struggles with economic and financial inclusion, ranking 32nd out of 42 African countries in the newly released AWII 2025.

Morocco has made notable strides in advancing women’s political and legal rights, yet challenges persist in economic and financial inclusion, according to the African Women’s Inclusion Index (AWII) 2025. The report ranks Morocco 32nd out of 42 African countries, with an overall score of 44.2, categorizing its performance as poor.

North Africa Struggles with Women’s Inclusion

The AWII report highlights that North Africa remains the worst-performing subregion in Africa, with low scores in most dimensions except leadership. While some progress has been made in political representation, the region lags behind in economic empowerment and financial inclusion.

“North Africa is the worst-performing subregion, with the lowest scores in all dimensions except leadership,” the report states.

Morocco’s Progress in Women’s Leadership

One of Morocco’s notable achievements has been its efforts to increase women’s participation in governance. Between 2017 and 2022, the country’s leadership score jumped by 27.6 points, reaching 44.9. This reflects ongoing initiatives to empower women in decision-making roles and promote gender equality in leadership.

Economic and Financial Gaps Remain

Despite advancements in governance, Moroccan women continue to face significant barriers in economic participation. Limited access to financial resources, employment opportunities, and business ownership remains a key challenge. The slow progress in economic inclusion contributes to the country’s overall low ranking in the AWII 2025.

The Road Ahead for Women’s Inclusion in Morocco

While Morocco has demonstrated commitment to improving women’s leadership representation, achieving comprehensive gender equality requires more structural reforms. Addressing economic disparities, enhancing financial access, and ensuring equal job opportunities will be crucial in advancing women’s empowerment across the country.

With continued policy efforts and societal shifts, Morocco has the potential to significantly improve its standing in future rankings, ensuring that progress in leadership is complemented by stronger economic inclusion.
