Sindh Govt Launches Special Desk for Women Farmers under Benazir Hari Card

To empower women in agriculture, Sindh govt will offer crop insurance, solar tube wells, modern training, and advisory services via a new desk in the Agriculture Department.

KARACHI: In a significant move to empower women in agriculture, the Sindh government has announced the establishment of a dedicated desk within the Agriculture Department. This special unit will focus exclusively on addressing the needs, issues, and awareness of women farmers across the province.

Announced during a seminar on food security and the pivotal role of women in agriculture, held at a local hotel, Sindh Agriculture Minister Sardar Muhammad Baksh Mahar outlined several initiatives aimed at enhancing the livelihood of women in the farming community.

This new desk will serve as a central hub to listen to women farmers, guide them on modern farming practices, and ensure their concerns are addressed effectively. The minister emphasized that women play a vital role in Sindh’s agricultural economy and deserve access to equal opportunities and resources.

As part of the broader plan, women farmers will now receive updated information on high-yield crops, smart farming methods, and effective agricultural techniques through mobile phones, making learning and application easier for those in remote areas.

In addition, the Sindh government is rolling out multiple facilities under the Benazir Hari Card initiative. This card, introduced to support small-scale farmers, now covers approximately 1.4 million registered farmers through an online system. Women farmers are a key focus under this program.

Farmers owning up to 25 acres of land will benefit from a wide range of subsidies and resources. These include:

  • Subsidized solar-powered tube wells to reduce dependence on expensive and unreliable electricity

  • Crop insurance to safeguard against unexpected weather events and losses

  • Watercourse linings to improve irrigation efficiency and reduce water wastage

The minister also shared that over 24,000 kitchen garden kits have already been distributed to women farmers. These kits aim to promote household-level food security and give women greater control over food production.

Furthermore, the government plans to assist women in purchasing better quality seeds, fertilizers, and farm equipment, allowing them to boost productivity and increase their income. With rising inflation and unpredictable weather conditions, these initiatives are expected to make a tangible difference in the lives of countless women farmers.

Sardar Muhammad Baksh Mahar stressed that the Sindh government remains committed to bridging the gender gap in agriculture. By providing practical support and training, the government aims to not only recognize women’s contributions but also enhance their ability to sustain and grow their farming businesses.

These steps are part of a broader strategy to ensure food security, climate resilience, and inclusive agricultural development in Sindh. With the introduction of the special desk and other resources under the Benazir Hari Card, the province is setting a strong example in promoting gender equity in rural development.

This initiative marks a milestone in Sindh’s agricultural reforms and reflects the government’s commitment to empowering every farmer—regardless of gender—with tools for a better future.
