Former Tokyo Taxi Driver Arrested for Drugging, Assaulting Women—Over 50 Alleged Victims
Japanese police arrest ex-taxi driver accused of drugging and assaulting female passengers, with over 3,000 incriminating videos found—suggesting a horrifying pattern dating back to 2008.

TOKYO: A former taxi driver in Tokyo has been arrested by Japanese police on charges of drugging and sexually assaulting a female passenger. Shocking media reports suggest he may have targeted dozens of women, potentially making him one of Japan’s most prolific sex offenders in recent years.
The arrest, confirmed by Tokyo police on Wednesday, concerns an incident from last year in which the 54-year-old suspect allegedly gave a woman in her 20s sleeping pills, causing her to lose consciousness. He then transported her to his home, where he committed indecent acts and filmed the assault, a police spokesman told AFP.
The case escalated after investigators uncovered disturbing evidence—approximately 3,000 videos and images—showing the man sexually assaulting what appears to be around 50 different women either in his taxi or at his residence. The footage reportedly spans more than 15 years, dating back to 2008.
The Yomiuri Shimbun and Jiji Press, two of Japan’s leading news outlets, reported that forensic tests revealed traces of sleeping pills in the hair of the woman involved in the 2023 incident. This provided crucial physical evidence linking the suspect to the crime.
The suspect was initially arrested last October on separate charges of drugging another woman and stealing 40,000 yen (approximately $280) from her. He was released shortly afterward, but further investigation led to his re-arrest in December for indecent assault.
On Wednesday, he was formally arrested again—this time on much more serious allegations: non-consensual sexual intercourse and violating laws related to the unauthorized filming of sexual content.
Authorities are currently reviewing the thousands of videos and images to identify more victims. The scale and method of the alleged crimes have sent shockwaves through the nation, raising serious questions about public safety and legal safeguards for passengers using private transport services.
“This is a deeply disturbing case,” a senior police official said. “We are committed to uncovering the full extent of the crimes and ensuring justice for the victims.”
Public reaction has been swift, with many demanding stronger regulations for private transport operators and stricter penalties for sexual crimes. Women’s rights advocates in Japan are calling for systemic reforms, including better surveillance, reporting mechanisms, and survivor support services.
The case has also reignited discussions on the need for comprehensive background checks for taxi drivers and greater awareness of the use of substances in sexual assaults.
As the investigation unfolds, Tokyo police urge any potential victims who may have come into contact with the suspect to come forward. Authorities have set up a special hotline for reports and assistance.
This arrest marks a turning point in Japan’s ongoing efforts to combat sexual violence and protect vulnerable individuals from predatory behavior. The public now awaits further updates as law enforcement works to deliver justice in a case that has exposed a hidden crisis.
