Skilled Climbers instruct Swat Females in Using Maps and Compass

Experienced compass specialist and Italian mountaineering guide Francesca Colesanti shared on Sunday the inspiring tales of trailblazing women whose bravery and tenacity dispelled the gender norms of their era.

She said this while working with other Italian and Spanish female climbing instructors to teach Swat girls how to use maps and compasses.

“A legacy of brave women has left its mark in the annals of mountaineering history within the towering peaks and rugged landscapes of the world’s great mountains, where adventure intersects with adversity,” the speaker stated.

The story of Colesanti begins with the French adventurer Henriette d’Angeville, who became the second woman to reach the peak of Mount Blanc without assistance in 1838 and carved her name into the mountain’s slopes.

With every story, Colesanti dispels the myth that mountaineering was a sport exclusive to males by shedding light on the lives of women like Nina Boarelli, Lucy Walker, Mary Varale, and Loulou Boulaz, whose acts of bravery and tenacity reverberated across the Alps.

But Colesanti’s mission goes beyond simple historical reenactment; via showcasing modern heroes who are pushing the frontiers of mountaineering, she hopes to motivate a new generation.

“Among them stand the British alpinist Alison Hargreaves, who dared to climb Mount Everest solo while six months pregnant in 1995, and the Polish mountaineer Wanda Rutkiewicz, who scaled the formidable heights of K2,” she stated.

Colesanti highlights the French pioneer Catherine Destivelle, who broke new tracks in severe alpine climbing, and the American rock climber Lynn Hill, whose daring free ascent of The Nose on El Capitan captivated the attention of the globe. Their tales from the 1990s ring true as examples of women’s unwavering perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

The story of Nives Meroi, who along with her spouse scaled all 14 eight-thousanders in 2017 without the need for extra oxygen, is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to persevere and never give up on her goals.

Colesanti, however, draws their attention to the sacrifices made by individuals who dared to dream, even amid these tales of victory. Chiaretta Ramorino’s diverse life is an example of how one can use personal agency to shape one’s own destiny and reflects the desire of freedom and self-expression.

Colesanti draws our attention to the present as her story progresses, showing us how a new generation of female mountaineers is rising to take up the legacy of their forebears. With unyielding will, Pakistani ladies Samina Baig and Naila Kiani have scaled some of the world’s most challenging peaks, reaching new heights in the process.

Baig’s 2013 summit of Mount Everest and her subsequent victories on K2, Nanga Parbat, and the Seven Summits demonstrated her unshakable dedication to shattering boundaries and motivating others to pursue similar goals.

Kiani’s incredible accomplishment of ascending 10 of the 14 eight-thousanders in just two years demonstrates her unmatched willpower and fortitude in the face of difficulty.
