Boycotting for Change: A Call to End the Apartheid Regime

History has shown that in the face of injustice, ordinary people can wield extraordinary power
when they are united in purpose as was witnessed in the first apartheid regime in South Africa by the National Party government. We now witness a pretty similar condition in Palestine where their persistent struggles against Israel scream out to the world regarding another apartheid regime. This is a stark reminder that systematic discrimination still exists in the 21st century. In this article, we will focus on the power of collective action and boycotting which will be a formidable weapon in the struggle to end the oppression of Palestinians. The oppression of Palestine has been going on for decades and the power imbalance is evident.
Israel has one of the world’s strongest militaries equipped with the most advanced technology and
weapons. Other than the military and financial superiority, they also have an immense influence on the media and the major international companies that support Israel. Using this they gained the
support of the governments of superpower states and MNCs (Multinational Corporations) which act upon their interests. But the people of Gaza, through the power of social media, have been showing their side of the story and the atrocities being committed which has grasped the attention of the common people. This is the stage set for the world where they discuss, present their views, and show whether they stand with the just or unjust.
Now the common people sympathize with the struggles of the Palestinians and the governments are hesitant to go against Israel. It’s like a tug-of-war between what people want and what the politicians decide. The public is going on protests to stop this genocide while some governments are trying to silence them.
Now the question that arises is how are the common people going to make a difference? Well, there is the example of South Africa which was an apartheid regime that started in 1948 where there were discriminatory laws that favored the white population. Still, this system was dismantled in the 1990s because people around the world started to enforce the power of boycotting and their economy took a hit which was a game-changer. Now onto the present situation, people around the world have started boycotting the brands and the products that support Israel. There has been a significant drop in the stocks of McDonalds, Disney, Starbucks, etc. There is a BDS (Boycott
Divestment Sanction) movement going on, this site provides with the information regarding the
products that support Israel.
Now to understand why boycott is important and how it can be used against an apartheid regime. Apartheid is expensive as this regime can continue based on spreading propaganda and misinformation so when more and more people spread the truth, the other party that spreads disinformation has to spend a lot more to counter the truth and with the people boycotting, this will cut off their financial supply which will make it impossible to sustain this system.
To sum it up, boycotting is a powerful weapon that when used properly can bring an end to
the apartheid system as seen in South Africa. Every individual’s choices matter and by not supporting
oppressive systems, we can contribute to a powerful movement. We can only witness the effects of boycotts with collective efforts i.e. local and global efforts. Boycotting work, it worked for South Africa and it will work for the Palestinians but it has to be on a large scale.
