Iqra Khalid and Salma Zahid Secure Fourth Term in Canadian Parliament
Two Pakistani-origin women, Iqra Khalid and Salma Zahid, have been re-elected to Canada’s Parliament, highlighting the growing impact of Pakistani-Canadians in politics and public service.

In a proud moment for the Pakistani diaspora, Iqra Khalid and Salma Zahid, both women of Pakistani origin, have been re-elected to the Canadian Parliament for the fourth consecutive time, strengthening the presence of Pakistani-Canadians in national leadership roles.
Running under the Liberal Party banner, both candidates won by solid margins. Their victories underscore years of consistent community engagement and dedication to public service.
Iqra Khalid, representing Mississauga—Erin Mills, won her seat with a lead of over 5,000 votes. She was seen celebrating emotionally with her family as supporters gathered to mark her success. Khalid, who moved to Canada in 1998, holds a criminology degree from York University and a law degree from the University of Michigan.
Over her parliamentary career, she has been an active voice for human rights, justice, and anti-racism efforts. One of her most notable achievements is introducing Motion 103, which called for a national strategy to tackle systemic racism and religious discrimination. She has also chaired the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights and continues to proudly represent her Pakistani roots in her work.
Salma Zahid, who won from Scarborough Centre—Don Valley East with over 21,000 votes, also marked a major milestone in her political journey. First elected in 2015, Zahid holds an MBA from Quaid-e-Azam University and a Master’s degree from the University of London. Before politics, she worked in the Ontario public service and was deeply involved in grassroots community work, especially supporting women and youth.
Zahid has been a passionate advocate for minority rights, education, and multiculturalism. She has spoken out on international human rights issues, such as the Rohingya crisis, and currently chairs the Canada-Palestine Parliamentary Friendship Group.
With at least six Pakistani-origin candidates elected to Parliament, these victories highlight the increasing influence of Pakistani-Canadians in shaping inclusive and diverse policies. Khalid and Zahid continue to inspire many, especially young women, to pursue leadership and create meaningful change.
